Derby, in respect to

the posts of control & Customs established in the neighbourhood

of Macao & Hong Kong, & am formed to subject of my despatch of July 5 ult., of the aforesaid Despatch, which has been transmitted to me

on the 13th Sept: ult. The Secretary of State

for Foreign Affairs, after having ascertained that the views of H. M.'s Govt had been taken into most serious consideration;

thinks that no analogy

exists between the

establishments

of Macao & Hongkong,

because the Chinese Govt recognized Macao as

being a Portuguese

possession,
